Year end reviews can give the impression that there is in fact a “trend” when in reality it may be only isolated happenstance that comes together nicely each end of December.

This particular review is nonetheless fascinating. Do designers and creative types get a pass when inspired by elements of a culturally specific piece of clothing ? Are we as consumers being insensitive if we decide, as an example, to wear traditional Indian dress or jewelry  “inspired” by native customs?

Most  of the criticism seems to come from the naming of the collections – which makes one wonder where the pr and marketing teams were in the process of the roll out.  Take for example “DSquaw”  -a derogatory name  for a North American Indian woman – to launch a line of winter coats.

Do countries own their  traditional garb or can it be shared -if so should there be some constraints to honor the traditions.
