The fashion label, Mansur Gavriel, launched in 2012, has become famous for its bucket bag, which is already considered a classic.
What is amusing to us is that there is a kind of retro feel to the handbags and the shoes and what we mean actually is literally retro, not retro with an edge. Their new line of shoes is compared ( perhaps not favorably) to the “secretary shoe” of the 50’s and 60’s. Some of us may have worn shoes like them. Even some of the handbags have a “Queen Elizabeth look” about them.
So the question is – Are we able to pull off retro without looking like we do not know the difference between what we wore then and the look of today. Will these retro designs actually makes us look dated? Tricky question and it raises the issue of ageism. Do these young designers think about us or are they creating retro for the 20 and 30 somethings? That would disappoint us. What do you think? Take a look at these two stories:
