Do young girls appreciate how different their lives are today because of women who came before them. The new film, “Suffragette”, captures the extraordinary abuse and cruelty women suffered to change the way in which women were treated. It is a tough film to watch.
We are pleased to report that there is a group of young girls, ages 13-22, who not only care about the achievements of women, but who are sharing these accomplishments. They have created a Field Trip App that will alert your phone when you are traveling of sites where women made a difference. For example, they include the Arpilleristas in Santiago, Chile, a group of women who wove colorful tapestries documenting the turmoil and violence of Pinochet’s regime.
These young girls are looking for inspiration from the women who came before them and are asking us to include women we think made a difference in history.
The women do not have to be famous or have been in the headlines, but rather, they want to learn about women who positively affected the lives of others. This is a chance to nominate your favorite historical women and, in doing so, add their name to the global map that will be a part of this app.
Imagine traveling to San Francisco, Chile or the UK and, as you pass by the location where at one point in time, a woman made history, your phone will alert you and you can give thanks for their contribution and learn more about how they influenced history.
We are going to check back on this project in a couple of months and see how far it has come. Let us know if you have someone to nominate:
