I attended the reception for the Iris Apfel documentary and retrospective at the Peabody Essex Museum last night. The film is spectacular and her clothing collected over sixty years is extraordinary. She has a separate apartment in New York just for her wardrobe. She has collected clothing of exquisite fabrics and colors from all over the world. Her accessories, her jewelry, her handbags, her shoes, are out of this world. And she has shopped in the most diverse places, from runways in Paris to funky out of the way shops in Harlem, to bazaars in India and Thailand.
Her clothing was the subject of an amazing exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum eight years ago that was so popular that it travelled to the Norton, Nassau and Peabody Essex Museums.
Iris has recently donated a portion of her wardrobe to the Peabody Essex Museum. Even in her 90s, she is a woman of exceptional style who draws attention and adoration from everyone at every level in the fashion industry.
She is an inspiration, one of fashion’s Grand Dames. I recommend reading more about her and her life and seeing the documentary by Albert Maysles called Iris.
