Growing up around Cambridge, Massachusetts, we couldn’t help but be influenced by the diverse personalities that Harvard Square attracted. There was The Coop, bookstores full of first editions, lovingly sourced by eccentric owners, Cardullo’s, the original specialty store for wine, chocolate and cheese, and, of course, Design Research(DR), which brought a new esthetic to housewares, furnishings and Marimekko clothing. And who can forget Club 47 where famous folk singers were close enough to touch as they sang.
The Square became a mecca for protest and outrage – civil rights, anti- war, equality for women- as impassioned hippies and intellectuals took over. Tents were set up in the adjacent Cambridge Common to accommodate the dedicated young and old committed to social and political change.
Time moves on and The Square moved to another stage of attractions including trendy hotels, restaurants, and shopping for shoes and dresses that seemed almost unreal for the Cambridge mavens who wore their greying hair in a bun, flowing denim skirts, green backpacks, astride a Raleigh three-speed bike with a basket on the front.
With these many influences as we grew up, we realize that we love style and fashion but we still love the core principals of character. Which brings us to Samantha Power, US Ambassador to the UN since August of 2013. At 45, she has accomplished much including winning a Pulitzer, born in Ireland, emigrating with her parents to America, graduating from Yale, and Director of Civil Right’s Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
If you still have a desire to get involved, and make your voice heard, the simplicity of her message and her call to action is just a finger tip away and there is certainly plenty of opportunity to be idealistic and hopeful once again:
