Lucy and I went to see the India Hicks Collection at a gathering in a friend’s barn yesterday. I had attended an earlier event to see her bags but wanted Lucy to see them. It is a fun and unusual collection of bags, and bijou and scarves and even her fragrances.
A former model and muse in the fashion world, India was born in London of a remarkable lineage of British royalty. Her father, the decorator David Hicks, was an interior designer as highly regarded as a Sister Parish and her mother is Lady Pamela Hicks, whose father was the last viceroy of India.
Unlike the usual Internet start-up, India is committed to encouraging women to become entrepreneurs by starting as “Ambassadors” for her exclusive collections. She made the decision to launch her brand with this unique business model because she said, “I didn’t want my product sitting cold on the shelves of a Bergdorf Goodman.”
Everything is designed by India and there is a story behind each piece, which is shared by her Ambassadors to friends and clients.
She is beyond enthusiastic and remarkably committed to bringing unique and beautiful products to market. (The photo on the right is the bag I bought. The mini horse is mine.)
She is thoughtful and has a commitment to social responsibility and she wants us all to live what she calls “An Extraordinary Life”. We hope she succeeds and that she continues to support women as entrepreneurs. We encourage you to visit her site: www.indiahicks.com
