This French woman is not a household name but she is absolutely unique in the pantheon of women who know what style is. Sophie Fontanel does not dress like the typical French woman. She says, “In France, we have style but the problem is that this style could be so boring. This is the same for every woman: In the upper class in Paris, you have a slim jean, you have ballerinas [flats], you have a simple tee shirt, you have a gray coat, and then your hair is with no artifacts [accessories]. This is a typical French woman. For me, it’s very, very boring, so I try everything.”
A fashion journalist and the author of The Art of Sleeping Alone, Fontanel has become an Instagram digital celebrity and she did it by taking selfies.
Check out Instagram@sophiefontanel to see her outré looks and extreme wardrobe choices from large oversized men’s shirts to vintage clothing that few would ever consider. But some how she has developed a look and a style that works. Another of her great quotes is a caption under a selfie in a bathing suit: “Before becoming a reality, age is mirage. Do not dive too quickly into reality. You have time.”
The article from Vogue includes her nine rules to dressing well, shopping vintage, and what it means to be “feminine” after age forty. One that really stood out for us was: “To Be Well Dressed, One Must Be Well Read.” Really, she says this and she also says that men are afraid of women and that we should use this to our advantage. You have to love the French!
