For those of us who live in the Boston area, 2007 was the end of an era. Filenes, the retail giant in its day, closed its iconic flagship store at Downtown Crossing. It was a shopping adventure when we were teenagers and for many of us, the place to buy our first bra.
Does this mark the end of an era of large retail shops as online shopping moves to the forefront? But wait, along comes a new store from Dublin, Ireland, Primark, with 77,000 square feet of shopping in the same location as the old Filenes. Perhaps what goes around, comes around or maybe the Irish have re-configured the shopping experience. Will Primark’s collections and marketing strategy be enough to bring shoppers back to retail? We are in a turbulent period in retail when social media may become more than a place for conversation but a place to buy anything and everything.
Large chains like Macys are closing stores across the country. Amazon has a big push on for its fashion business and online stores like Net-a-Porter make everything for the rich and famous immediately available with a click of a button. Where do you think this is going? And what is your shopping experience like now? How do you shop?
