One of the most frequent requests we get about fashion particularly in the fall is how to update our closets without spending a fortune.
Like many things lately–simplicity should rule. This is the perfect time of year to get ride of the excess – whether too small or too big, too faded, or too tired.
There are some clothes that we just love regardless of how long we have had them or how “not in vogue” they may be. To make the choices easier, Lucy keeps a memory box of special pieces–knowing they may never be worn again but are too precious to giveaway. Consider this as step one, and already the closet will look less cluttered.
The way to shop this season is to put together what is being called “Capsule Wardrobe”. This does not mean a total redo or reimagining but rather it means simple additions that make stepping out so much “simpler” (there is that word).
Capsule Wardrobe is a phrase that marketers have used for years, but lately it has become a way for us to consider what our closet looks like when we first open the door each morning. Are we faced with: “What to wear and be out the door in 30 minutes?” Instead, how about “What to wear that makes me feel good?”
Especially in the fall and winter we wear layers: pants, blouse, sweater, and or jacket and scarf etc. Think simple which means less stuff and more classics. If you do nothing else this season, you have to have a trench coat. It is the look for 2023-2024, and there is a wide range of prices from hundreds to thousands of dollars:

In reviewing the various sites for Capsule Wardrobe, we found several good ones but lots of over- the-top ones. The overarching principle is back to basics. Look at your closet and consider including the following must haves: basic black pants, a crisp white shirt, perhaps a denim skirt instead of pants, two or three good sweaters, black or beige, and maybe an additional sweater in burgundy or a shade of purple.
Add to this collection a mid-length tan skirt, a good pair of black boots, maybe a new cashmere scarf, and a trench-style winter coat. The other important update to your closet is to look at updating shoes, perhaps a pair of black tread loafers, a pair of ballerina flats, and then add an oversized hoodie sweatshirt.
What is interesting to note is that we did not see any tight leggings and not many Lycra workout tights. Maybe we are over these.

By the way, I asked Chat GPT if women over 70 still had import. And this is what I got back:
“Absolutely! Women in their seventies can absolutely be valued and contribute in many ways. Age should never define a person’s worth or value. Women in their seventies have a wealth of life experience, wisdom, and skills to offer. They can be valued for their knowledge, insights, and perspectives, which can greatly benefit their families, communities, and even society as a whole. It’s important to recognize and appreciate the contributions of individuals of all ages, including women in their seventies, as they continue to make a positive impact in various aspects of life.”
So there!!
