As Lucy and I look back at why we decided to create this blog, we recognize that one of the most fascinating concepts in fashion is style. Our byline says Chroniclers of Style, but we struggle with defining what style means.images

However, there was one person who successfully chronicled style and that was Bill Cunningham who died this week. For over forty years, he gave us a unique look at style, as he travelled by bicycle through the streets of New York. It didn’t matter to him who you were or what neighborhood you came from, he appreciated the diversity of fashion that defined style.26cunningham-callout-thumbWide

He believed passionately that style was personal and he sought out average everyday people on the street. He said, “Fashion is as vital and as interesting today as ever. I know what people with a more formal attitude mean when they say they’re horrified by what they see on the street. But fashion is doing its job. It’s mirroring exactly our times.”

We looked forward to his On The Street section of the Sunday Times where he featured polka dots, or black and white themes, or hats, coats, and or boots. images-1His insight into style was remarkable, even as he wore baggy pants, sneakers and a tired denim coat. His photographs speak volumes about the times.   We are certain there will a retrospective of his images and, hopefully, a book of his work. We may still not be able to “define style” but Cunningham’s images bring us closer to what style means:
