Brazilian Moqueca Stew

With the excitement and media attention on the Olympics in Rio, we turn our attention to Brazil. In honor of the country, we had a dinner party last week and served Moqueca, which is a Brazilian fish stew. It is a traditional dish and quite delicious.

My friend Sonia

What do we know about Brazil and its culture and people? I have the good fortune to have as a dear friend a wonderful Brazilian woman. She has the cheekbones of Gisele, as do so many of the Brazilian women, and the spirit and joy of life of the country as well. From the mountainous region of Minais Gerais, she taught me how to make delightful treats using fresh ingredients, lots of limes and lemons, beans and rice and yams and sweet potatoes.

Colorful Festival in Brazil

The cuisine, music, and style of Brazil together create a culture that is deeply imbedded and diverse. According to Wikipedia, the culture of Brazil is an ethnic mixing of indigenous tribes, Portuguese colonists and people of African descent. “ In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, together with further waves of Portuguese colonization, Italians, Spaniards, Germans, Levantine Arabs, Poles, Helvetians and Ukrainians settled in Brazil, playing an important role in its culture as it started to shape a multicultural and multiethnic society.”As a result of three hundred years of colonization by the Portuguese empire, the core of Brazilian culture is derived from the culture of Portugal. Portuguese is the predominant language, religion and architectural influence. Today, Brazil is known for its colorful celebrations and festivals.
