Who knew that fashion could come from women in prison? And how will the public respond to clothing manufactured by incarcerated women?
While it is not a new concept, there is a shift in the fashion industry to look toward the potential cheap labor available in prisons instead of outsourcing materials to third world countries.
For some businesses, using prison labor is categorized as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR). But for an increasing number of industry leaders, it is an opportunity to train skilled labor in the US and the UK which struggle with a dearth of skilled workers. Some argue that using cheap prison labor is taking advantage, since the pay scale is minimal. On the other hand, a majority of prisoners want to work, feel needed, earn money and develop skills for their eventual release. There doesn’ t seem to be a simple answer:
