We must pay tribute to the great women Olympic athletes in Rio this week.
These young women surpass in body strength, spirit and determination anything we could have imagined as young girls in the 1950’s and 60’s. Do you remember that we played basketball when girls were only allowed to play half-court? It never occurred to us that there would be professional women basketball and hockey teams!
Lucy’s daughter was one of the first girls to join the then all boys Little League team. I play competitive tennis now in a women’s league that was not on anyone’s radar screen when we were in our 20s and 30s.
We were surprised to learn that the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in 1900 in Paris, Margaret Abbott, remains largely unknown in the annals of history: http://www.vogue.com/?s=first+woman+gold+medal+winner.
In this article, we loved seeing the charming illustration of Margaret by Charles Dana Gibson – who is the great, great, great uncle of our dear friend, Dana, and the creator of the famed Gibson Girls.
The oldest woman to compete at the Olympics this year is 41.
Oksana Chursovitina, representing Uzbekistan, is competing in gymnastics for the seventh time. Compared to us, she is a kid really. We guess she is saying use it or lose it so, Let’s Get Out There Girls! xxxxxx Lucy and Claudia
