We may be a little late to the DIY “gourmet/farm to your door to table ” trend, but we decided to check out the top three that seem to be developing a following. First, why the interest in “delivery to home” gourmet foods? Here are some of the reasons:
We live alone or
We do not like to cook or
We do not like to eat in a restaurant alone or
We look for a recipe to make something and realize that we don’t have key ingredients on hand or that can be bought in a reasonable quantity or
We would like to become a better chef but are a little skittish or
Single serve meals at Whole Foods or local small markets are too expensive and may contain ingredients we do not like or
After 40 plus years, we are done with cooking and would like an alternative or
All of the above!
The meals come for a week at a time delivered to your door. Average price is about $8.50-9.00 per meal for a standard meal – think steak and it goes up to about $18. The independent reviews are all fairly positive, so we thought we would try one and see if we liked it and report back.
Here is Blue Apron as an example:
“Blue Apron delivers original, step-by-step recipes and fresh ingredients to customers nationwide. Our menus change every week, so with each delivery you learn to cook inventive new dishes with seasonal ingredients. By letting us source these hard-to-find ingredients for you, you’ll get food that is fresher and cheaper than you can get at your local supermarket, and there’s no waste because we only send you what you need for each recipe.
We named our company “Blue Apron” because chefs around the world wear blue aprons when they’re learning to cook, and it has become a symbol of lifelong learning in cooking. Blue Apron is a weekly subscription service with no commitment – you can skip a week or cancel at anytime with a week’s notice, and delivery is always free. We can’t wait to cook with you!”.

Here is a sample description for Basque Style Cod : Basque cooking, which draws from both French and Spanish traditions, is known for its vivid red sauce—a delicious accompaniment to mild cod. In classic fashion, we’re using fresh bell pepper and ground Espelette pepper, infusing the tomato sauce with its characteristic smokiness. A simple relish of parsley, almonds and garlic tops it all off with a bit of crunch (and brings out the sautéed garlic in the dish).
Bon Appetit
