There is a must see show for anyone who loves fashion and style.
It is the retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum in New York devoted to the illustrious history of the doyenne of French chic: “Jacqueline de Ribes: The Art of Style.”
The show features more than 60 of her iconic haute couture and ready-to-wear gowns by designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and Valentino, as well as her own creations from the 1980s. Beyond her fashions, her life is a story to envy as a countess who travelled with the jet set of Europe from the slopes of Gstaad to the yachts in St. Tropez to the masked balls of Paris.
“Elegance. It’s an attitude. A frame of mind An intuition, a refusal, a rigor, a research, a knowledge. The attitude of elegance is also a way of behaving,” de Ribes says.
Ever a force, even today at 86, the Viscomtesse de Ribes worked closely with the curator to contribute selections from her extensive archive. Called the “Queen of Couture” by Bazaar magazine, she embodies elegance.
As the Countess has said: “Style is what makes you different; it’s your own stamp, a message about yourself.” We should all listen to this.
