Our hats are off to Eileen Fisher who has been thoughtfully working toward sustainability in the fashion industry long before any one else. According to the site Quartz, “Eileen Fisher wants to inspire others in the fashion industry to reconsider how they do business, and to ask how they can go from what she calls a “model of doing less bad” to one that’s genuinely restorative.”
Think about what it takes to make the shirt you are wearing. It takes water, energy, and pesticides to grow the material for the fabric; then polluting chemicals for dying the fabric; and finally, your shirt ends up in a landfill. At Eileen Fisher, Amy Hall, the director of social consciousness, said the company is moving away from using viscose, because it requires a toxic solvent to produce from wood pulp. Viscose is one of Fisher’s best sellers, but a more sustainable fabric will replace it by 2020. The company is committed to sustainability with 92% of its cotton organic and 83% of its linen with a goal of all organic fabrics in five years.
Eileen Fisher is a privately held company truly committed to sustainable fashion. According to Wikipedia, customers can donate their gently used Eileen Fisher clothing in return for a $5 gift certificate per article. After cleaning, the clothing is resold and the income funds business grants for women and leadership programs for young women.
The story behind Eileen Fisher and her company makes me want to support her efforts. Her fashions are timeless and elegant in a quiet way for grown-up women. We should all support her efforts to make fashion sustainable and we should wear her clothing:
